Richard is my name. Guitar is my game. Enriching lives with heartfelt music is what I do. My channel includes performances of my Joe Pass transcriptions and other great guitarists like Tuck Andress, Mimi Fox, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Earl Klugh, etc.) and my own solo guitar arrangements of tunes I like as well as great arrangements from others as well.
Oogway Ascends - Guitar Arrangement by Richard Greig
I've loved the melody for when Oogway Ascends in the Dreamworks movie Kung Fu Panda. It's an emotional part of the movie as Shifu has to deal with Oogway's absence and Hans Zimmer definitely brings a heartfelt melody and score to accompany that scene. This is my solo guitar take on that piece. My arrangement utilizes an open D minor tuning (DADFAD from the 6th string to the 1st string) and use of artificial harmonics to increase the range of the melody and to add a nice contrast representing the orchestral section of the piece. I ended up playing an E to D pull off at the end instead of my intended F to D pull off for the final chord the piece so my apologies for that. Due to the nature of hitting the harmonics right and me being overall happy with how things turned out I had to just let that go though. Not that big of a deal but one of those that gnaws at you a bit. The troubles of recording live in one take. While it's not perfect it is good, raw and authentic. I hope you this heartfelt piece and arrangement.

I skipped this one at first because I was looking for classical guitar, but this was gorgeous, with a really good, warm tone….well, done…i cant read music because I’m an idiot, but I’d love to find the tablature, but it’s pretty straight forward because ur arrangement is so beautiful and simple, & I might be able to figure it out if I watch it a bunch, which would be a joy, so, either way….anyway, thanks for this:)

Do you find learning Joe pass Arrangements helps you with your own solo guitar playing
Yes. Absolutely. Getting into Joe's head on what he was thinking on an intellectual level as well as playing what he played to the best of my ability helps my instinct and muscle reflexes and memory. I've been creating my own guitar arrangements more intently since 2020 and all the Joe Pass transcriptions I've done has helped tremendously both my playing and how I see and view solo guitar playing when creating or improvising my own arrangements. I highly recommend transcribing whoever you're favorite guitarist is and play as much like them as you can. That seems to be the best kind of teacher from my own experience. You're intent is not to be a copy of Joe or whoever your favorite guitarist or musician is but to see things through their eyes and have your fingers play how they did. That perspective and experience helps you to eventually find your own voice and your own way. One thing I've noticed that I do that Joe doesn't is stretchy dissonant chords. I've learned some of those stretchy chords from John Stowell and some cool open chord voicings from two Brazilian guitar instructors I've had. Hope that helps and best wishes and success in your guitar journey.

Unfortunately I didn’t tab this one out and I just went by ear. There’s a guy named François Leduc on Patreon and UA-cam and he tabbed out this Joe Pass arrangement. I didn’t use his version and did it by ear myself but he does good work and makes his transcriptions available.
